Lifetime announced that it would be premiering a biopic on R&B singer Keyshia Cole.
According to Billboard, Cole will be involved in every aspect of the project, acting as both an executive producer and a star in the movie.
“As a young girl, I survived so many different situations,” Cole says in the trailer. “I always wanted to make a movie about my life.”
Throughout the film, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter is followed from her “early days in Oakland honing her musical talents to her rise to a multi-platinum selling recording artist and television personality, to her complicated yet warmhearted relationship.”
Frankie Lons, Cole’s mother, will be portrayed in the movie by actress Debbi Morgan. The singer revealed in the teaser that the recent passing of her mother motivated her to complete the film.
Cole says in the video, “After my mom passed away, I wanted to do something to show my love.”
She claimed that while she was portraying her life on camera, the loss of her mother posed an additional emotional strain.
“Playing the role of myself was a unique opportunity to re-live special moments in my life that also gave me a chance to process her loss in ways I did not expect,” Cole said. “I miss her every day, and even though she is not here, her presence was felt throughout this film.”
“Keyshia Cole: This is My Story” will air on the network later this month on June 24.
