New details have emerged in the death of Lil Jon’s son, Nathan Smith, as authorities confirm how the 27-year-old died earlier this month.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner ruled that Nathan, known professionally as DJ Young Slade, died from “drowning in the setting of psilocybin use.” Officials classified the manner of death as an accident. Psilocybin is a psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms. According to the autopsy, the substance was detected in Smith’s blood at the time of his death.
Smith was found on February 6 in a pond near his residence in Milton, a city about 30 miles north of Atlanta. He had been reported missing days earlier, which led to a search before his body was recovered.
In a public tribute shared after his passing, Lil Jon described his son as an “immensely caring, thoughtful, polite, passionate, and warmhearted” young man. Smith had carved out his own lane in music under the name DJ Young Slade, performing and producing while staying connected to Atlanta’s music scene. Following confirmation of his death, messages of support poured in from fellow artists and fans.
Authorities have closed the investigation, stating there was no evidence of foul play. The family has not announced additional public details as they continue to grieve.
