Lil Nas X on Rodeo

Lil Nas X Fires Back At Claims That He Stole ‘Rodeo’ From Producer Don Lee

A lawsuit filed in federal court back in October by music producer Brandon Lee aka Don Lee accused Lil Nas X, Cardi B, and Sony Music and Columbia Records of ripping him off for the Lil Nas X track, “Rodeo.”

In the docs, Lee accused all parties of copyright infringement. He claimed that he wrote a track titled, “gwenXdonlee4-142”, which was then incorporated into another song called “Broad Day.” Allegedly, Lil Nas and Cardi B ripped off his version without permission or compensation. Lee pointed out the tempo and instrument similarities as well.

“The similarities between the works at issue include but are not limited to the following: the two works at issue employ a number of substantially similar elements and material which constitute a constellation of elements creating a substantially similar overall sound and feel,” the suit read.

However, Lil Nas fired back in newly filed court docs, denying the allegations.

“The work, Rodeo, was created independently from and without knowledge of the allegedly infringed work.” He also argued, “the musical elements from gwenXdonlee4-142 supposedly used in Rodeo are neither original to Plaintiffs nor copyrightable subject matter.”

The producer is suing for unspecified damages.
