The rapper and singer returned to a Los Angeles courtroom Monday, making his first appearance since being arrested in August for allegedly assaulting police officers during a bizarre public incident.

Bystanders captured the “Old Town Road” artist enter the Van Nuys courthouse with a smile, marking a new chapter in a turbulent year. Back in August, police say he was found nearly naked on Ventura Boulevard and allegedly resisted arrest violently, injuring three officers. A fourth officer claims Lil Nas X also tried to stop him from doing his job, according to a criminal complaint.

After his arrest, the Grammy-award winner entered an inpatient treatment program, missing a scheduled court appearance in September. His lawyers at the time said the focus was on his mental health and recovery.

“As you can see, Montero is doing amazing, doing great, and we’re super happy for him,” attorney Drew Findling told reporters outside the courtroom. “We’re looking forward to a positive resolution in this case, which we’re very confident of.”

Another lawyer on his team, Christy O’Connor, previously denied drug involvement, calling the case an “aberration” in his life.

A judge set his bail at $75,000 and required him to attend four Narcotics Anonymous meetings weekly. If convicted on all four felony charges, Lil Nas X could face up to five years in prison.

He’s due back in court on March 12.
