Two Lions At The Pittsburgh Zoo Tested Positive For COVID-19

The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium says two of their lions have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

According to CBS News, the animals’ fecal matter was tested after displaying some symptoms, including occasional coughing and diarrhea. Zookeepers have since tested all six of their lions as a precaution.

“The risk of infection between zoo animals and guests is very low as we do not allow any of our visitors to come within close proximity to any of our cats,” Zoo President and CEO Dr. Barbara Baker said in a news release.

The zoo believes the felines may have contracted the virus after coming in contact with an asymptomatic zoo employee.

Zoo officials said the lions are expected to make a full recovery.
