According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a multi-state listeria outbreak connected to deli meat has sickened ten people and killed one. Cases have been reported in Florida, New York, and Massachusetts. The CDC is unsure of what brand of deli meat or supplier is to blame. The sickened individuals reported eating Italian-style meats like mortadella, salami, and prosciutto.
“Avoid eating deli meats, unless heated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot just before serving,” the CDC said.
Symptoms for listeria can begin from the same day that contaminated food is consumed to up to 70 days after. Diarrhea, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, stiff neck, headache, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions are all symptoms of listeria.
The CDC advises seeing a medical professional if you experience any of these symptoms after eating deli meats.
The CDC also says that it is important to practice food safety.
