After Jay-Z’s name surfaced in a massive new release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, the pop star took to social media to defend the Roc Nation mogul. While the files have sparked a firestorm of speculation, Lizzo is urging everyone to actually read the context before dragging the rap legend through the mud.
In a candid video, Lizzo expressed her disbelief at how quickly people jumped to conclusions without looking at the facts.
“It’s just like the American people in comments. I knew he was wrong, Jay-Z! I knew he was… What did it say Jay-Z did? He was there in 1996?” she asked. She went on to suggest that the public is being easily manipulated by name-dropping, stating, “Y’all are falling for it; it’s the easiest, oldest trick in a book.”
Lizzo didn’t stop at defending Hov; she took a swipe at the collective logic of social media users.
“Honestly, I’m losing faith in the average intelligence of the American person because come on,” she vented. She pointed out that in a file spanning three million documents, a name appearing doesn’t automatically equal a criminal act. According to Lizzo, the reference was far from a scandal, suggesting it was simply a business-related mention about his success model.
The singer, who has often spoken about how the media portrays public figures, once famously said, “I’m not the villain that the media tries to make me out to be,” and it seems she’s extending that same grace to Jay-Z. She ended her rant by telling fans to stop looking for a crime where there isn’t one. “Where is the crime? Focus!” she demanded.
As the documents continue to be reviewed by the public, Lizzo is making it clear that a mention in a business context shouldn’t be confused with being an accomplice.
