Lizzo and her legal team have proceeded with a legal case to shut down the claims made by three plagiarism accusers, who say they deserve a piece of the singer’s recent success.
Lizzo filed a lawsuit against songwriters Justin Raisen, Jeremiah Raisen, and Justin “Yves” Rothman, in a California federal court. Lizzo accused the brothers of harassment and is now asking a judge to declare that the Raisen brothers did not help her co-write her hit song ‘Truth Hurts’ and that they are not entitled to any writing credit or financial profits.
Lizzo’s lawsuit accuses the three songwriters of coming, ”Out of the woodwork with an illegitimate claim to co-own a piece of the work.”
Justin and Jeremiah Raisen had previously taken to Instagram to publicly claim that they were never properly credited for their part of a writing session in April 2017, where they allegedly included the line, “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch,” in a demo song called, “Healthy”.
Another writer at the session, Justin “Yves” Rothman, has since claimed that he was also uncredited as a songwriter for the song.
As Baller Alert reported Wednesday, Lizzo took to Instagram to discredit the accusations against her, saying, “The men who now claim a piece of Truth Hurts did not help me write any part of the song,” she added, “They had nothing to do with the line or how I chose to sing it. There was no one in the room when I wrote Truth Hurts, except me, Ricky Reed, and my tears. That song is my life, and its words are my truth.”
Lizzo also stated that she plans to give songwriting credits to Mina Lioness, the woman whose 2017 tweet resonated with her and inspired the line.
According to Billboard, the brothers responded back to Lizzo and her legal team with a statement that started by saying, “First and foremost, we are beyond happy that our coming forward with our story helped Mina Lioness get the credit she deserved on “Truth Hurts.”
It then questioned, “If Lizzo wrote this song alone with Ricky Reed, why was Jesse Saint John credited as a writer in 2017 from being one of the five writers in the ‘Healthy’ sessions in April of 2017.”
‘Truth Hurts’ has been No.1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for seven weeks.
