A longtime royal reporter and friend to Princess Diana reflects on his last phone call with her for the upcoming Diana documentary.
Richard Kay had no idea at the time that it would be what turned out to be the Princess of Wales’ last telephone conversation the night of her tragic death in Paris in 1997.
“I spoke to her that night,” he says, according to PEOPLE. “[The] police said that the last call she made was to me.”
He also said that Diana was “in quite a good place” and was eager to get back to her two sons — Princes William and Harry. She was looking forward to a fresh start and becoming “a different kind of royalty.”
The documentary celebrates Diana’s life ahead of what would be her 60th birthday. It will show her life both in front of the cameras and those private moments behind the scenes.
Prince William and Prince Harry are also paying tribute to their mother this year by unveiling a statue to honor their late mother. The statue will be placed in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, one of Diana’s favorite spots.
The documentary is scheduled to air at 9 p.m. on June 24 in the UK.
