Elon Musk is ready to take over movie nights everywhere by branching out into the diner and drive-in theater realm.
This week, it was revealed that Tesla is planning to open a 1950s-style diner and drive-in theater in Los Angeles. The project seems to officially be in development, with the city’s Department of Building and Safety department already approving the permits for the “Diner and Drive-In Movie Supercharger.” Musk has had this establishment in the works for a while.
“Major new Supercharger station coming to Santa Monica soon! Hoping to have 50’s diner & 100 best movie clips playing, too. Thanks Santa Monica city!” he tweeted in April 2021, though he reportedly birthed the concept in 2018.

The diner and theater will be located in West Hollywood. The superchargers at the locations will allow Tesla drivers to charge their cars for up to 200 miles in just 15 minutes. Since the charging time is so fast, the cinema will only air short clips of classic films. The initial mock-ups of the building demonstrate two stories topped with plush rooftop seating, several eateries to choose from, and 32 charging stations for Tesla owner’s convenience. Back in March, another rendering of the structure was shown during Tesla’s Investor Day, demonstrating a more detailed version of the facility, showing the EV’s charging as people bustled throughout the different restaurants or lounged upstairs.
While there is clearly much progress being made on Musk’s latest creation, there have been no announcements of an official opening date.
