Los Angeles Lakers Acquire Big Man Mark Williams ahead of NBA Trade Deadline

The new and improved Lakers found their big man of the future last night in a late-night trade with the Charlotte Hornets. Los Angeles sent first-round pick Dalton Knecht, former Duke small forward Cam Reddish, and a 2031 unprotected first-round pick in exchange for 22-year-old big man Mark Williams.

Williams’ production has steadily increased this season with the Hornets. With a standing reach of 9’9”, he presents a strong lob threat for both Luka Doncic and LeBron James. The Lakers’ front office, led by General Manager Rob Pelinka, managed to land Williams without giving up key assets that were previously off the table during their negotiations for Doncic, securing their long-term presence in the paint.

The former Duke center is averaging 15.6 points and 9.6 rebounds this season, with an impressive 63% true shooting percentage and nearly 80% free-throw accuracy. His addition is a significant boost for the Lakers as the trade deadline looms. In the coming weeks, the team is expected to focus on acquiring wings from the buyout market.

On the other side of the deal, Charlotte gains a valuable asset in Dalton Knecht, who has been solid for the Lakers this season. However, sources suggest that the same defensive inconsistencies that have limited Knecht’s role in L.A. also played a part in Charlotte’s willingness to part ways with Williams.

Only time will tell how seamlessly Williams fits alongside two of the best passers in the league. One thing is certain—Rob Pelinka has positioned the Lakers for both immediate success and a promising future.
