One thing a mother’s going to do is protect her kids. A Louisiana mother did just that when she fatally shot a man breaking into her home.
Authorities say when Robert Rheams, 51, broke into the mother of two’s home in Hammond, he was armed with a shovel and a lug wrench. The incident happened around 5 a.m. Sunday, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.
A “physical altercation” ensued between the two before the mother, at some point, shot the intruder, the sheriff’s office added.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rheams was on parole and had spent about 20 years in prison for armed robbery, ABC News reported. It was reported that he also allegedly committed a carjacking hours before the home invasion, authorities said.
“This case appears to be a homeowner exercising second amendment rights to protect herself and her children from a violent home invasion,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for further review.”
