A Louisiana mother and her boyfriend are facing a first-degree murder charge after her son’s body was found in a trash can.
Houma’s two-year-old Ezekiel Harry was reported missing on Tuesday by his mother, Maya Jones. She claimed a stranger in a gray truck abducted her son as she and her other three children helplessly looked on. However, detectives immediately noticed discrepancies in her story. They quickly determined foul play was involved, and Jones and her boyfriend, 37-year-old Jermaine Robinson, became suspects.
By 6:00 p.m. that evening, investigators located Harry’s remains in a trash can on Daspit Street. Detectives also located surveillance video that showed Jones and Robinson carrying a black duffel bag from their home on the day Harry went missing. Footage shows the couple returning hours later without the bag.
“You can see Maya Jones and Jermaine Robinson are carrying the lifeless body of Ezekiel Harry,” said Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman during a press conference Wednesday.
A neighbor was one of the first people to be alerted of the abduction when Jones banged on her door and told the woman she needed to call 911. The unidentified neighbor says she thought Jones may have been in shock but is now “heartbroken” to know that the entire ordeal was staged. Other residents who lived nearby reported that the couple fought frequently and were concerned when they heard screaming that lasted throughout the night. A woman who lived across the street says she called the police several times in recent weeks after hearing the violence in the home.
The toddler’s cause of death has not yet been determined, but Coleman confirmed his body showed signs of physical abuse. In addition to first-degree murder, Jones and Robinson have been charged with evidence tampering. Jones’ other three children are now in the custody of their father, Trey Harry, who says he is trying to be “as strong as possible” for his kid’s sake.
Terrebonne District Attorney Joe Waitz has said the case is eligible for the death penalty but will consult with the family before deciding which penalty to seek.
Jones and Robinson were both denied bond.
