Paris woke up to chaos after one of the boldest museum robberies in history went down right inside the Louvre. Early Sunday morning, just as the museum opened its doors to visitors, a group of masked thieves pulled off a lightning-fast heist and vanished with jewels worth millions. French officials say the stolen pieces include royal treasures once belonging to Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Eugénie.

The robbery took place around 9:30 a.m. inside the Galerie d’Apollon, a glittering section of the Louvre that houses France’s crown jewels and other royal artifacts. According to investigators, the suspects entered through an area currently under renovation, bypassed security systems, smashed through glass cases, and escaped in under ten minutes. Witnesses described loud shattering sounds followed by the sight of masked figures sprinting toward the exit before speeding off on motor scooters waiting nearby.

The museum was immediately evacuated and closed to the public as police swarmed the area. The Louvre released a brief statement confirming the incident and calling the stolen jewels “of inestimable historical value.” No injuries were reported, but the shock rippled across Paris and the global art world. The Louvre, which welcomes nearly nine million visitors a year, is known for its tight security, making this theft especially embarrassing for French authorities.

Investigators say the thieves knew exactly what they were doing. Officials believe they had inside knowledge of the museum’s layout and timed the operation with military-like precision. Surveillance footage shows the suspects dressed in black, carrying tools believed to be diamond-tipped cutters or small power saws. Within minutes, they smashed two reinforced glass cases and snatched several royal jewelry sets before escaping.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin called the heist “an attack on cultural heritage” and vowed to bring the criminals to justice. Police later discovered one damaged jewel abandoned near the museum, but the rest of the collection remains missing. Experts warn that selling such recognizable treasures on the black market will be nearly impossible, meaning the pieces could disappear into private collections for years.

Security analysts are already pointing fingers at the museum’s oversight during renovation work. Temporary construction access points and scaffoldings appear to have given the thieves a weak spot to exploit. The Louvre, home to world treasures like the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, hasn’t seen a robbery of this scale in decades. Many Parisians are stunned that such an operation could unfold in the heart of a city constantly under surveillance.

As of now, police say they are reviewing hours of surveillance footage from the surrounding area and tracking possible escape routes leading toward the Seine River. International agencies have been alerted, and airports are on high alert in case the jewels are smuggled out of the country. French authorities say the museum will remain closed until further notice as they evaluate how such a massive security failure happened inside one of the most protected institutions on Earth.

The Louvre’s management has not confirmed when the museum will reopen, and curators are assessing whether any other items were damaged during the heist. For many, this robbery isn’t just about stolen jewelry; it’s about how fragile cultural history can be, even in the most guarded places.

What happened at the Louvre today will likely go down as one of the most daring art crimes of the century. And while investigators are confident they’ll catch whoever is responsible, for now, the world’s eyes are fixed on Paris, wondering how anyone could steal a piece of history right from under its nose.
