Netflix’s ‘Love is Blind‘ producers are being sued by a season 5 contestant who claims she was sexually assaulted.
According to Deadline, Tran Dang is suing Kinetic Content and Delirium TV for sexual assault, false imprisonment, and negligence, claiming aggressive recruitment and intentional sequestration for two weeks.
While filming the show’s fifth season in Mexico, Dang claims she was reportedly assaulted by her on-screen fiance, Thomas Smith.
According to the filing, “Due to Delirium TV and Kinetic Content’s 24-hour surveillance of Plaintiff and Defendant Smith, most if not all of these traumatic acts were filmed by the production crew and within their knowledge.”
Dang demands a jury trial and alleges that the production companies covered up the sexual assault by framing it as “a lack of attraction on the part of the Plaintiff.” Thomas Smith is also named in the lawsuit. She was also shocked that no one from the production attempted to intervene during the alleged assault. Dang later claimed she spoke to an assistant producer about the incident, who left her feeling that she was at fault for not effectively communicating or taking the ‘relationship’ seriously with Smith.
Dang left the show during filming and seeks significant damages for the defendant’s alleged wrongful actions. Notably, despite the show’s debut on Netflix on September 22, Dang and Smith were not featured in the final cut.
“We support and stand with victims of sexual assault, but Ms. Dang’s claims against the producers are meritless,” said Kinetic Content and Delirium TV. “We document the independent choices of adults who volunteer to participate in a social experiment,’ they added. “Their journey is not scripted, nor is it filmed around the clock. We have no knowledge or control over what occurs in private living spaces when not filming, and participants may choose to end their journey at any time.”
The production companies emphasized their commitment to addressing assault allegations but argued that Dang never reported the incident during filming. They pointed out that “Ms. Dang continued in the experiment for weeks after her lawyers now claim an incident occurred. We deny and will vigorously defend the allegations against us.”
