In a year that has shown its fair share of ups and downs, many are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, including rapper Machine Gun Kelly, 30, who recently opened up about going to therapy for his past drug use, and how supportive girlfriend Megan Fox has been during the journey.
In an interview with Dave Franco, the 30-year-old artist revealed that he has begun the necessary steps to begin living a life of happiness instead of drug abuse.
“Currently, my drug of choice is happiness and commitment to the art, rather than commitment to a vice that I believed made the art,” he stated.
“I’m taking steps. I had my first therapy session last Thursday. That’s the first time I ever went, ‘Hey, I need to separate these two people,’ referencing Machine Gun Kelly and Colson Baker. The dichotomy is too intense for me.”
Machine Gun Kelly then explained that while the early stages have been a challenge for him, his “commitment to change” is what is inspiring him to move forward.
“I’m still kind of ripping my hair out. Why am I not changing overnight? How am I supposed to meditate for 10 minutes when I can’t even sit in my own brain for two minutes without distracting myself by doing something? That’s really hard,” The King of Staten Island actor explained.
“But the commitment to change is inspiring, and I think will reverberate through the universe and definitely through my family,” he added. “I can see it already with the people around me. The willingness to finally be happy with my own self has invited a much more vibrant energy around us than before.”
While the talented rapper has openly stated that he is on the road to a better life, he also spoke candidly about how severe his addiction to Adderall was and the effect that it had on him as an artist.
“I think I watched myself believe that drugs were how you attained a level or unlocked something in your brain, and I’ve seen the pros and cons of it,” he said. “Adderall was a huge thing for me for a long time.”
He mentioned that his addiction led him from taking the drug “orally” to inhaling it through his nose, which then left him feeling afraid to enter the studio if he didn’t have something to aid him.
“I wouldn’t even step out unless there was a medicine man who was going to visit me and give me what I needed.”
It was then that Machine Gun Kelly realized how much drugs had impacted his life and how much of an issue it became.
“You’re telling yourself you can’t do this without that when really it’s in you the whole time,” he said. “If that pill did that for you, then everyone who’s taken that would just be making albums and writing songs. And so that limited me.”
“As I grow, that same person who I was when I was 25 isn’t who I am now,” he added.
Now, at the age of 30 and on the brink of a “hit new album,” Machine Gun Kelly credits his girlfriend actress Megan Fox for being by his side.
“When you have a partner, mine being Megan, sitting there with you on those dark nights when you’re sweating and not being able to figure out why you’re so in your head, to help you get out of your head and put it in perspective, that really, really helps,” the “Forget Me Too” singer shared.
A similar statement was made by Fox during an interview with Nylon.
During the conversation, the Rogue actress stated: “There’s never an attempt to control him on my end,” Fox said. “It’s more that he looks to me to avoid his own self-destructive tendencies. And that’s where I’m useful because on his own and left to his own devices, I don’t know how much interest he has in caring for himself.”
