Magic Johnson credits Dr. Fauci for helping him throughout his HIV diagnosis.
Johnson was a recent guest on ‘The View,’ where he discussed his HIV journey. While speaking with hosts, Johnson says Dr. Fauci taught him how to maintain being healthy after learning his status.
“First of all, let me thank Dr. Fauci and Dr. Ho, they both really helped me to be here,” the former NBA player began. “They helped me understand that I had to take my meds. I had to be comfortable with my new status. Make sure I kept a positive attitude and keep working out, and so I’ve been doing that. Here I am 30 years later.”
Johnson later thanked his wife, Cookie Johnson, for staying by his side during the scandal. He also spoke on becoming an advocate and trying to help others.
“That was everything, for me to heal, also for me to help people,” he added. “Especially in the black and brown communities. Because it was running rapidly through our community at that time. We brought the numbers down. I became the face, and I am happy about that.”
Magic was diagnosed with HIV in November 1991. At the time, Johnson was playing as the starting point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers. However, he later announced his retirement after learning he was HIV positive.
