When serial bomb sender Cesar Sayoc was arrested this week, the white van he left behind gave a clear indication of his motive behind sending bombs to 14 different social and political figures that oppose #DonaldTrump.
Sayoc’s Attorney, Ronald Lowy, met and began representing him 20 years ago for some legal issues he was having at the time. Lowy said Sayoc struck him as an insecure man, “like a 14-year-old in an adult’s body,” who was “obsessed with bodybuilding and nightclubs” and who had no interest in politics.
Lowy made an appearance on #AndersonCooper since the arrest and explained that Sayoc’s father had abandoned the family when he was young and that, in his opinion, Sayoc struggled with identity issues as a result. “This was someone lost. He was looking for anything, and he found a father in Trump.”
The attorney continued on explaining how Sayoc became attached to Trump, stating, “It’s my opinion that he was attracted to the Trump formula of reaching out … to these types of outsiders, people who don’t fit in, people who are angry at America, telling them that they have a place at the table, telling them that it’s okay to get angry. I believe that that was a motivating factor. Do I blame the president solely? No, this is a sick individual. I actually blame all of us. We have to start arranging for treatment when we start to see the problems.”
Lowy is now representing Sayoc’s mother and sisters. According to the attorney, Sayoc’s mother Madeline Giardiello said she hasn’t spoken to her son in three years and he never showed interest in politics when he and his family were last in touch. He says the family is overwhelmed with grief after the ordeal and stated, “No one should have to receive these threats and devices, whether operable or not. And they’re sad for a child and brother who is so sick and apparently involved in this crazy activity.”
