Malcolm‑Jamal Warner’s 8-year-old daughter is alive today because of a group of surfers who didn’t hesitate to jump into danger.
On July 20th, the 54-year-old “Cosby Show” star was swimming with his daughter off Playa Cocles in Limón, Costa Rica, when a powerful rip current swept them away from shore. According to local authorities, two surfers spotted the pair struggling in the rough waters. One used his board to lift Warner’s daughter above the waves, while another volunteer lifeguard and surfer worked to bring Warner and another swimmer to shore.
The child, whose name has not been released, was unharmed and is now back with her mother. Witnesses say she clung to the board as the surfer paddled her to safety, just moments before conditions worsened.
While Warner could not be revived despite 45 minutes of CPR, the surfers’ actions ensured his daughter survived the terrifying ordeal. The Red Cross and Judicial Investigation Agency confirmed she needed no medical treatment beyond initial evaluation.
Playa Cocles, a popular beach, is notorious for its unpredictable rip currents, with warning signs posted for tourists. Locals say many drownings have occurred there in recent years, often involving visitors unfamiliar with the ocean’s strength.
Warner, remembered for his role as Theo Huxtable and later roles in “Suits” and “The Resident,” leaves behind his wife and daughter, now facing life without him, but alive because strangers risked their lives.
