A former white executive at a health care company in North Carolina won $10 million in a legal battle over his claim that he was fired because he is a white man.
David Duvall, a former senior VP of marketing at Novant Health, claimed he was fired due to his race and sex, violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
Duvall claimed that he was pushed out of this job without explanation in July 2018 just as the company was pushing to diversify its top leadership positions.
Novant Health has denied those allegations, claiming that he was fired for deficient performance and the delegation of critical duties to subordinates.
“We are extremely disappointed in the verdict, as we believe it is not supported by the evidence presented at trial, which includes our reason for Mr. Duvall’s termination,” a Novant Health spokesperson said in a statement. “We will pursue all legal options, including appeal.”
