A deranged man is behind bars after hijacking an ambulance at gunpoint with an injured teenager inside.
The dangerous situation unfolded on Friday in Houston, Texas, when emergency personnel responded to the scene of a 16-year-old girl being hit by a car as she crossed the street around 2:30 a.m. While en route to the hospital, 43-year-old Brandon Warren somehow pulled his vehicle in front of the ambulance. The violent man got out and fired several shots onto a highway before pointing the weapon at the EMT who was driving. Warren ordered the driver from the ambulance before taking off with the victim and another EMT who was tending to her.
The firefighter who remained in the vehicle with Warren remained calm despite him pointing the gun at her. Police were able to track the emergency truck across southeast Houston before Warren made his way into the southwestern part of the city.
Eventually, Houston police were able to stop the ambulance on Southwest Freeway at Weslayan. Warren was immediately taken into custody, and the female victim was safely transported to another ambulance. Neither she nor the EMT who de-escalated the situation was harmed.
Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña praised the female EMT for remaining calm and administering aid to the patient during the entire ordeal.
Warren has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, and felony evading arrest.
