A man in the U.S. lost all of his limbs after he ate his roommate’s leftover chicken noodle meal.
A 19-year-old man, who has been identified as JC, developed a severe bacterial infection that resulted in him losing all his limbs, including all 10 fingers and both of his legs. All of this happened after he ate his roommate’s leftover food, a chicken noodle meal his roommate bought the night before. The man’s case was documented in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Yahoo! News reports after the man ate the food, and he immediately felt sick. His unwell feeling worsened through the night, ranging from abdominal pain, chills, muscle pain, blurry vision, among other symptoms. Five hours before going to the hospital, he began developing a purple-looking rash on his skin, worsening. He was immediately transported from a hospital’s intensive care unit by helicopter for more treatment.
His body temperature went from 37.4C and a pulse of 147 beats a minute to 40.8C and 166 beats per minute, and that’s when doctors decided to sedate him. In order to keep him alive, doctors had to amputate his fingers and legs below his knees after he developed gangrene in those areas and his kidneys started to fail.
JC’s blood test results revealed a bacteria called neisseria meningitidis, and he was diagnosed with meningococcal purpura fulminans. JC hasn’t traveled recently, he had no known allergies and he had all his childhood vaccinations. He’d also received his first meningococcal vaccine when he was 12, but he didn’t receive the booster shot, which is recommended at 16. YouTube doctor Dr. Bernard says this is a rare occasion that is the realist of “food being bad.”
“The evidence appears to point to the food being bad and that is a freak accident,” Dr. Bernard said, Yahoo! News reports.
