A man in Atlanta is lucky to be alive after being held at gunpoint and robbed for a pair of brand new Air Jordan sneakers at Lenox Square Mall.
The frightening incident took place on January 28th when a man was walking to his car after purchasing the new kicks. As he stood by his vehicle parked near Starbucks, a red Chevrolet Camaro with tinted windows pulled up and stopped next to him. A masked man armed with a black semi-automatic pistol emerged from the passenger seat and approached the victim, pointing the gun at him and demanding the shoes. He also took the victim’s wallet and removed $100 in cash from it. As if the encounter was not frightening enough, the thief searched the man’s Nissan to look for other valuables. When he didn’t locate anything else he wanted, he returned to the Camaro and drove off. The front of Lenox Square does have security guards, but no one noticed the robbery taking place. However, much of it was captured on surveillance video.
Once the robbers were out of sight, the shaken man flagged down a nearby off-duty officer to report the crime. He said the assailant was about 6-feet-tall and in his early to mid-20s.
This stick-up at Lenox is just the latest in a string of robberies that have plagued the mall for years. In many cases, the victims are targeted while they shop. Robbers will watch them make high-end purchases and follow them to the parking lot to rob them.
Security consultant Chris Rich of Hawque Protection Group advises anyone purchasing a “hot item” to request a security escort when leaving the mall.
