A man was sentenced to serve time in prison after fatally shooting a woman following an argument over the 2016 presidential election.
Corona, California resident John Kevin McVoy Jr., 40, was sentenced to 35 years to life in prison after fatally shooting a man’s wife, who was holding their 2-year-old son at the time.
Back on Jan. 10, 2017, McVoy and his garage bandmate Victor Garcia got into an argument over the Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s presidential race against one another during band practice at Garcia’s home in Long Beach. According to NBC Los Angeles, McVoy pulled out a gun after being teased for saying he voted for Clinton. That’s when Garcia told him to leave.
McVoy ended up shooting Garcia, and a second bullet hit Garcia’s wife, Susan Garcia. At the time, their son was sitting on Susan’s lap. The child was not physically harmed.
Garcia was shot in the head and sustained would that allegedly sent him into a coma for months. He also had to undergo two brain surgery and claims he is still struggling with physical issues. Since then, McVoy has apologized to the family, saying he never meant to hurt anyone. “As far as my remorse, I think about this every day,” said McVoy.
