William Rivas walked into a Queens beauty salon and began stabbing his estranged wife to death in front of all of her co-workers.
Carmen Iris Santiago’s co-workers said he had recently started stalking her, showing up to her place of work and pacing back and forth outside in front of customers and scaring other employees.
On Wednesday, police say he walked into the Tu S’tilo Salon SPA in Jackson Heights and asked to speak to her.
According to The NY Times, the salon’s owner was nervous about his presence and told him that he was not allowed inside.
However, that’s when eyewitnesses say Rivas forced his way inside, approached her, threw her to the ground, pulled out a long knife and then stabbed her to death in front of horrified colleagues and customers.
The estranged husband then sprawled himself over her body and sobbed uncontrollably, according to video footage taken moments after the attack.
Ms. Santiago, 35, was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead later on Wednesday.
Rivas, 39, was arrested and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police did not immediately release a motive for the murder, but Ms. Santiago’s co-workers told the N.Y. Times Rivas had a history of violent behavior towards his estranged.
