Earlier this week, tragedy struck in Manchester, England after bombs rattled an arena filled with Ariana Grande fans and their guardians. The attack, which has since been deemed a terrorist act, claimed the lives of 22 people and injured several dozen more.
The 22-year-old responsible, who has been identified as Salman Abedi, reportedly used taxpayer dollars to fund his terrorist studies at a training camp in Libya.
According to New York Post, Abedi received about $18,000 in financial aid, over a span of two years, before he dropped out of England’s Salford University. Friends and neighbors of Abedi told Britain’s Telegraph newspaper that he never had a job, but had the money to purchase the material for the bomb, rent a house, and take trips to Libya for training.
Though the university and the Student Loans Company declined to comment, a former London detective discussed funding terror training, revealing that a student loan is a popular way to finance terrorist acts.
“All you have got to do is get yourself into university and then off you go,” David Videcette told the publication. “Often they have no intention of turning up.”
