Lorenzo Dechalus, better known as old-school rapper Lord Jamar, recently sparked outrage with inflammatory comments about Vice President Kamala Harris during an appearance on The Art of Dialogue podcast. Jamar, known for his outspoken views, referred to Harris with a derogatory term, calling her a “bitch” and suggesting she wasn’t “qualified to work at Dunkin’ Donuts.”
The remarks quickly ignited backlash, with many accusing Jamar of crossing a line and using unnecessary misogynistic language to criticize Harris. In response to the growing controversy, Jamar appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored, where political commentator Marc Lamont Hill confronted him directly about the offensive comments.
Marc Lamont Hill Calls Out Lord Jamar
During the segment, Hill made it clear that Jamar’s language was unacceptable, no matter the context. “I heard the bleep,” Hill said, referencing the censored slur. “I can’t imagine a circumstance where we need to call her that. She doesn’t deserve that, any more than she deserves to be told she’s not qualified to run a Dunkin’ Donuts.” Hill emphasized that such comments were disrespectful and unnecessary, regardless of one’s political disagreements with Harris.
When asked to explain his reasoning for the insult, Jamar defended himself by pointing out the nature of the platform where the comments were made. “The platform I was on is more hip hop oriented. It’s a looser environment,” Jamar argued, suggesting that the podcast allowed for more casual, freewheeling speech. He went on to accuse Harris of being dismissive and evasive in her public appearances, which he claims was the real reason for his harsh words.
Lord Jamar’s Past Comes Back to Haunt Him
The controversy surrounding Jamar’s comments has also led to renewed scrutiny of his own actions and history. Several social media users pointed out the hypocrisy of his stance, especially as Jamar identifies as a member of the Five Percent Nation (5%ers). For context, the Five Percent Nation is a religious and cultural movement rooted in Black empowerment and righteous behavior. Critics have questioned how someone preaching such values could engage in such disrespectful rhetoric.
Adding fuel to the fire, it was revealed that Lord Jamar’s voting records showed he had never voted, despite his political commentary. On Piers Morgan Uncensored, Jamar claimed he voted for Barack Obama during his first campaign but has since criticized Obama’s presidency. This led to further criticism of Jamar, with some accusing him of being disingenuous in his political takes.
Domestic Violence Allegations Resurface
As the backlash over his comments grew, Jamar’s past legal troubles also resurfaced. The New York Post recently brought up an old story detailing Lord Jamar’s 2000 arrest for domestic violence. According to the report, Jamar—who also goes by the name Allah—was arrested in downtown Brooklyn after police were called to his home, where he was accused of assaulting his wife, Dana Witfield-Allah, leaving her with a fat lip. During the investigation, police also found a loaded and unlicensed shotgun and two bulletproof vests in his home, leading to additional charges of misdemeanor assault and weapons possession.
The rapper’s troubled history with women came up again when an old interview clip resurfaced where Jamar made controversial statements about domestic violence. In the interview with DJ Vlad, Jamar commented that “some women provoke men to hit them,” a statement that was met with heavy criticism at the time and continues to tarnish his reputation.
