Under Trump’s leadership, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is taking a hard stance on student visas from China. On May 28, Rubio announced sweeping changes aimed at blocking access for Chinese nationals tied to the Communist Party or studying in critical tech and science sectors.
In partnership with the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department will begin revoking existing visas and tightening the screening process for new applicants from China and Hong Kong. The goal, according to Rubio, is to protect U.S. innovation and national security from foreign interference.
Fields like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and cybersecurity are expected to come under intense scrutiny, especially for students whose affiliations raise red flags.
This isn’t just a policy shift. Rubio is signaling that the U.S. won’t allow foreign governments, especially authoritarian regimes, to gain access to American educational and research institutions. Go figure.
