Marcus Spears Says "A Wide Receiver Won’t Save the Browns" in NFL Draft Debate

The Cleveland Browns are in a unique position during the first round of the NFL Draft as they sit at the number three position. The Browns could take game-changing defensive end Abdul Carter out of Penn State. They could even select two-way star Travis Hunter as well. The Cleveland Browns have a lot of holes to fill, specifically at the most important position: quarterback. The only ones currently under contract are aging vet Joe Flacco, a one-legged Deshaun Watson, and Kenny Pickett.

It’s a lackluster room that does not show much direction for their franchise cornerstone of the future. There have been rumors in the past linking the Cleveland Browns to Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott, but up until this point, it has only been noise. The idea of Cleveland trading back and potentially including their second-round pick (No. 33) in a deal could allow them to move back and still get their quarterback of the future Thursday night.

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears took opposing sides when it came to the Browns’ idea of selecting Travis Hunter. They claimed that Hunter coming to Cleveland would not make this team better tomorrow and that, with their holes on offense, he may be a waste of a pick.

“Travis Hunter has said he wants to play wide receiver. A wide receiver is not going to help the Cleveland Browns’ a** any better,” Marcus Spears said on First Take this morning. “Travis Hunter has not been a full-time wide receiver in his life, and you want an NFL franchise to bet on him being your number one wide receiver from day one when you still have questions at quarterback?”

Valid questions from Spears, and Dan’s reaction — while expected for the sake of debate — still raised eyebrows. Cleveland drafting a receiver with the third pick, even one who can also play cornerback when Cleveland already has one of the best in Denzel Ward, seems questionable. Hunter is a true generational talent; however, the fit just may not make the most sense for Cleveland.

Take a look at the video of Spears.
