As one of the most iconic divas of our time, we probably would never expect to hear Mariah Carey talk about being insecure. In a recent interview with the New York Post, Carey candidly speaks on her some of her deepest feelings, giving fans a real look into her life.

Backstage at Carey’s Madison Square Garden concert, the songstress said that she doesn’t see herself as the overly confident diva that many of us thinks she is.

“I just feel like I am a regular human being and I deserve the same respect as anybody else,” Carey said. “I have always had low self-esteem, and people do not recognize that.”

“Growing up different, being biracial, having the whole thing where I did not know if I fit in … That is why music became such a big part of my life, because it helped me overcome those issues,” she continued. “Sometimes it is hard to let your guard down.”

Though Carey admits that being in the music industry is not easy, she still has managed to become a household name and have much success.

These days Carey is keeping busy with her Vegas residency, in addition to touring for her All the Hits tour alongside Lionel Richie.

Mariah Carey also says that she’s still keeping her hand in the beauty industry and could possibly release new music soon.

“I am working on a new fragrance,” Carey said. “I don’t have a name … But it is with Elizabeth Arden. It smells like success. There is also a secret song I have been working on.”
