Mariah Carey threw shade on Twitter Saturday at an up-and-coming rapper who remixed one of her songs by referring him to her attorneys. But, apparently, the singer was really just joking.
On Friday, rapper YTK released his song “Let It Off,” which contained an uncleared sample of Carey’s hit “Shake It Off.” A mini viral campaign hit the internet in an attempt to help get the sample cleared. As part of it, A&R consultant Tommy Banks posted the video up with the caption, “Mariah Carey has 24 hours to respond.”

Carey seemed to clap back with a gif of her saying “GTFO,” which she captioned, “How about y’all have 24 hours to respond to my lawyers.” Ouch.

Apparently, Mimi’s tweet was all in jest. Banks explained in his Twitter thread that he reached out to the Roots’ Questlove for help getting the song cleared, and he reached out to Carey. Carey made the same joke to Quest because Sony holds the rights to the track. Since it’s not all good between her and Sony, the rapper’s team will need to go through lawyers to get the song properly cleared.
hey I want to reiterate that Mariah was joking, please stop saying rude shit to her.
She told that same joke to Quest Love hours before she responded to the tweet
and put us in contact with the people who can help us clear it!

It looks like the internet campaign paid off for YTK.
