According to the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office, former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III died from heatstroke.
Authorities found Barber, 38, dead on June 1 at an apartment he was believed to have been renting in the Dallas suburbs while performing a welfare check.
According to a Frisco police spokesman, Barber died of accidental heatstroke.
Billy Clark, a friend of Barber’s and an attorney, told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that Barber was in excellent shape and had been preparing to be a boxer.
Barber spent six seasons as a Cowboy, playing from 2005 through 2010. He retired in 2012 after spending one season with the Chicago Bears.
