Marlon Wayans stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week, where he got a chance to chop it up with guest host Tiffany Haddish.
The two revealed they met at a comedy camp in the late 90s when Haddish was only 16-years-old. That encounter began Haddish’s relationship with the Wayans family. She told him that at the time, she had a girlish crush on Marlon’s brother Shawn. To which he quipped, “you wasn’t ready!”
Haddish wasted no time putting Wayans on the spot, asking why she’s auditioned so many times to be in the Wayans family’s films without ever being cast.
“I know we friends, and I know you love me. I love you. You have helped me in so many different aspects in life, gave me some great advice,” she told her friend.Â
“But this what I want to know. I have auditioned for so many of your movies, your family— Why do I never get cast?” she asked. “You even made a role, ‘Tiffany Haddish type!’ I auditioned for myself! I auditioned to play me!”
“You wasn’t right for the part,” the 48-year-old comedian joked. “Me and my family always say you’re funny. As producers, you hire and cast people. You were always funny, but you were always on 10. And sometimes, you just be inappropriate.”
“It’s like a love scene, and you want to sit on the actor’s lap and fart,” the On The Rocks actor explained. “And it’s like ‘no Tiffany, it’s not for this scene.’ So, it was maturation that hit you.”
“It’s like, for me, even, right now, I feel like I’m ready. I’ve been preparing 30 years for what’s happening to me now. It all happens to you at a certain time when maturity and that stardom hits you,” Wayans continued.Â
“Never nothing personal. We love you,” he assured her. “Always thought you was funny. Me and my family, we proud of you.”
Marlon then thanked the funny woman for putting his niece on her stand-up series They Ready, joking that now he doesn’t have to employ her before offering up some of his nephews if Haddish decides to produce a He Ready version of the show.
