The 28th annual Bounce Trumpet Awards, hosted by Wanda Sykes, will take place on December 4th, celebrating the achievements and contributions of African Americans in entertainment and activism. Amongst this year’s honorees are Marsai Martin, Martin Lawrence, Cedric the Entertainer, and Ambassador Andrew Young.
Comedian and actor Martin Lawrence will receive the Luminary Award, which honors the actor for rising to the top of his field through his hit 90’s television series, ”Martin,” as well as his standup specials and long-spanning film career. His fellow comedic colleague Cedric the Entertainer, will be honored with the Excellence in Entertainment Award for similar achievements, observing his career that has also spanned more than thirty years.
14-year-old ”Black-ish” actress turned film producer Marsai Martin is set to receive the Rising Star Award, which is reserved for adolescents who are presently making significant strides in their industry. Earlier this year, Martin made history as the youngest-ever executive producer on a big-budget movie with her film “Little,” which she starred in, alongside Issa Rae and Regina Hall.
Civil Rights activist Andrew Young will receive the Xernona Clayton Award of Distinction, an honor awarded to those who have overcome adversity in an effort to make a change in this world. Young was an instrumental voice during the civil rights era, serving as executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) as well as a close adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. He later served as a U.S. Congressman from Georgia and a United States Ambassador to the United Nations, before finally settling into his role as Mayor of Atlanta in 1981.
Others set to be honored during the ceremony are HIV/AIDS activist Hydeia Broadbent and Head of Urban Music at Columbia Records, Phylicia Fant. Guest appearances include Steve Harvey, Nas, Mike Epps, and more! The ceremony will air on Bounce Sunday, January 12th, at 9:00 p.m.
