The skyline of Prince George’s County is about to undergo a high-tech transformation. State and local officials have officially announced plans to bring a specialized version of the world-renowned Sphere entertainment venue to National Harbor. This $1.4 billion project aims to replicate the immersive magic of the Las Vegas original, positioning Maryland as a premier destination for global concert tours and digital cinema.
While the Las Vegas predecessor seats over 17,000, the Maryland Sphere is being designed as a more intimate venue with a capacity of 6,000. Despite the size difference, the technological ambition remains the same. The project will feature the iconic LED exterior and the groundbreaking internal wrap-around screens that offer audiences a 360-degree sensory experience.
“Most importantly, this isn’t costing county taxpayers money,” explained County Executive Aisha Braveboy, who is pushing for a groundbreaking by the end of 2026. The financial strategy relies on a $200 million Tax Increment Financing (TIF) deal, which essentially captures future tax revenue generated by the venue itself to pay for its development. Governor Wes Moore confirmed that while the state is earmarking $10 million for the project, the “vast majority” of the $1.4 billion investment will be sourced from private capital.
The economic forecast for the project is staggering, with an estimated 2,500 construction jobs and 4,750 permanent roles created once the doors open. Beyond employment, the facility is projected to generate over $1 billion in yearly economic activity for the region. If approvals move forward, the target for completion is within the next three to four years.
The excitement among local leadership is palpable. Council member Jolene Ivey, self-described as “very geeked” about the development, already has her sights set on a dream opening act. “I’m a huge Bruno Mars fan… all day… so that would be my choice,” she noted, highlighting the venue’s potential to attract A-list talent that typically bypasses smaller markets.
If approved by the state legislature and the County Council, the National Harbor Sphere will serve as a cornerstone of Maryland’s modern entertainment economy, blending private investment with public vision to create a landmark unlike anything else on the East Coast.
