Maryland Caregiver Arrested and Charged For Killing An 81-Year-old-Woman

Following an investigation into the death of an 81-year-old woman who was initially reported to have fallen down the stairs, police have arrested and charged her Maryland caregiver with murder.

Maria Gloria Vazquez-Mebo, 35, was charged with first- and second-degree murder by Frederick County police. At the request of the victim’s family, outlets have chosen not to reveal her identity.

The victim’s husband hired Vazquez-Mebo to serve as his live-in caregiver, according to Lenient Kirk Henneberry.

He stated that 911 received a call from someone in the western Maryland residence on Sunday night to report that an elderly woman had fallen down the stairs. Police responded to the call and immediately contacted the coroner upon arriving on the scene.

“In this case, there was apparent head trauma to the victim, and other unusual circumstances,” Henneberry said.

The following day, detectives arrested Vazquez-Medo. While in custody, she “confessed to striking the victim multiple times with a blunt object.”

Police have yet to reveal a motive.

Vazquez-Mebo is being held without bond.
