The gunman responsible for the Tulsa, Oklahoma, mass shooting targeted the physician who performed his recent back surgery.
The shooter, identified as Michael Louis, entered the orthopedic offices of the Warren Clinic on the building’s second floor at Tulsa’s Saint Francis Hospital campus on Wednesday. Louis was armed with an AR-15-style rifle that he’d purchased earlier that day. He immediately went for Dr. Preston Phillips with a clear intent to kill him for allegedly causing him pain after performing the procedure. Louis left a note behind stating that the other three victims, Dr. Stephanie Husen, receptionist Amanda Glenn and patient William Love, were only killed because they “got in his way.” Several other people were injured in the shooting.
According to investigators, Dr. Phillips performed back surgery on Louis May 19th. After being released from the hospital on May 24th, Louis called the surgeon multiple times, requesting pain treatment. Apparently, Louis began prepping for the shooting on Sunday when he purchased a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol from a pawn shop. On Tuesday, he had an appointment with Phillips to address the pain once again. The next day, he purchased the AR-15 and went to the doctor’s office to carry out the massacre. After the carnage, Louis took his own life as officers closed in on him at around 4:58 p.m.
Michael Louis’s wife, whose identity has not been released, phoned police shortly after the rampage began to report that her husband had killed multiple people in the office. Before taking his own life, he called her to tell her what he’d done.
