A mass shooting took place in downtown Denver as thousands of Nuggets fans gathered to celebrate their NBA Finals win.
Shortly before 1:00 a.m., police began receiving reports of a shooting near the 2000 block of Market Street. Upon arrival, they located ten people suffering from gunshot wounds. Another victim was shot on 17th Street and Blake Street but self-transported to the hospital. Police believe the shooting stemmed from an argument involving several people during the celebration, though the details remain unclear. The violence broke out less than a mile away from the Ball Arena, where the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat.
“As far as what led up to this altercation that resulted in the shots being fired, that’s still under investigation at this time,” stated Denver Police Department spokesperson Doug Schepman.
As of now, three people are listed in critical condition. The rest have non-life-threatening injuries. Officers have arrested one person in connection to the gunfire, who was also suffering from a gunshot wound. His condition is listed as non-life-threatening. The shots erupted in an area where many people were patronizing bars and restaurants. Many poured out into the streets once the Nuggets were declared the winner.
On Monday night, the Nuggets defeated the Heat in an 89-94 victory, securing their first NBA championship. Sadly, the city’s joy was briefly overshadowed by what is among 291 mass shootings in the U.S. this year.
More suspects could be apprehended.
