Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has once again introduced legislation to abolish the federal Department of Education, continuing his push to return education policy decisions to states, local communities, and parents.

Massie announced the move on X Friday, stating, “I just reintroduced H.R. 899, a one-sentence bill to TERMINATE the federal Department of Education and return power back to teachers and parents.”

This is not the first time Massie has put forth this legislation. He previously introduced H.R. 899 in 2017 and reintroduced it in 2023.

The bill remains just one sentence long, stating simply: “The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2026.”

Massie has long argued that unelected federal bureaucrats should not dictate education policies, saying states and local communities are best suited to craft curricula that meet the needs of their students.

“Schools should be accountable. Parents have the right to choose the most appropriate educational opportunity for their children, including home school, public school, or private school,” Massie said in 2023 when he last reintroduced the bill.
