Matt Gaetz has officially withdrawn his name from consideration to serve as Attorney General in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. In a statement released on X Wednesday, Gaetz expressed gratitude for the nomination and the support he received but noted that his confirmation process was becoming a “distraction” for Trump’s transition team.

“I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback—and the incredible support of so many,” Gaetz said in a statement. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General.”
Trump’s selection of Gaetz reignited public attention on previous allegations against the former congressman. Gaetz was previously the subject of a Justice Department investigation involving allegations of sex trafficking and sex with a minor. He has consistently denied the allegations, and the investigation concluded with the DOJ electing not to bring charges. However, the controversy surrounding the allegations has continued to follow him.
Despite the challenges, Gaetz reiterated his commitment to supporting Trump and his vision for the country. “I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America,” Gaetz said.
Trump’s transition team has yet to announce a replacement nominee for Attorney General.
