Actor and author Matthew McConaughey says he won’t be making that move to run for the governor of Texas in 2022.
Over the past two years, the Academy Award-winning actor has mentioned his interests in politics and the possibility of taking on the goal of becoming Texas governor. While he never said what political party he’d side with, he did make some comments about the current political climate, saying, “Freedom comes with responsibility, “Our politics need more purpose,” “We need to trust in our lives” and other subtle opinions.
On Sunday night, McConaughey announced he would be putting his interest in being Texas governor to the side, for now, NPR reports.
“As a simple kid born in the little town of Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership,” McConaughey said in a video post on Twitter. “It’s a humbling and inspiring path to ponder. It is also a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment.” The deadline for candidates to sign up for the Texas primary is in a little over two weeks.
Even though McConaughey says he won’t be running this time around, back in October the best-selling author said that Texas governor cards may be in his favor in the future. “I am not — until I am,” said McConaughey during a broadcast on Twitter Spaces about the possibility of him running.
