Boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather, and UFC superstar, Conor McGregor, will go head to head in Vegas this Saturday – and regardless of the outcome, both will be walking away with a pretty decent paycheck. However, because the pairing crosses the boxing/UFC line, there isn’t an actual championship to be won, just a lot of bragging rights.
However, the World Boxing Council has decided to up the ante. The WBC has created a special belt for the fighter that comes out victorious. The elaborate “trophy” was unveiled at a press conference at the MGM Grand on Wednesday, and it’s pretty insane. The belt is made of 3 pounds of gold and the skin of one whole alligator, plus 300 emeralds, 600 sapphires, and 3,360 diamonds. They’ve already dubbed it the “Money Belt”, so it seems that the WBC may be on #TeamMayweather.
When asked just how much the belt cost, WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, said, “It cost many, many, many hours of work of many artisans. It is just a beautiful piece of work. It’s a lot of money. I don’t really have a figure. It’s a priceless piece for a historic event.”
