MC Lyte addresses her divorce and says that it was not a battle with her ex-husband to keep her music catalog.
Last week, the 52-year-old rapper’s divorce from John Wyche was finalized. The Blast obtained the official divorce documents that showed the couple split due to “irreconcilable differences.”
The documents also showed that Lyte’s prenuptial agreement will be upheld. Thanks to the prenup, the rapper gets to keep her clothing, jewelry, watches, financial accounts, furniture, etc. In addition, the prenup states Lyte will also maintain control over her music catalog including royalties.
On Saturday, Lyte took to Instagram to address the divorce and rumors of Wyche attempting to take her assets.
The rapper began her response by saying that her divorce from Wyche was not a “battle.” She added that he never tried to take her assets “any time before, during or after our marriage” and says the allegations against him are inaccurate.
Lyte also clarified that her previous statements about the divorce delay came from Wyche deciding to stall the signing “to save the relationship.”
The female emcee ended her message with giving her followers some advice on marriage and love.
“1. Divorce does not equal failure. We do not fail; it simply did not work…,” she wrote in the caption. “2. If you have anything to protect going into a marriage, get a prenuptial agreement so there’s no confusion if it comes to an end. As a matter of fact, make sure you protect all of your assets with proper insurance, financial and estate planning… 3. Focus on love and truth. Be careful what you say or imply about others…”
Lyte and Wyche met in 2017 after finding each other through Match.com. The couple tied the knot later that year but separated in 2018.
