McDonald’s announced the launch of three new sandwiches.
The international burger joint will be releasing three version os a new chicken sandwich: The Crispy Chicken Sandwich, decorated with pickles and served on a potato roll, the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, which includes a spicy pepper sauce, and the Deluxe Chicken Sandwich, which comes with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo, CNN reports. The burgers are set to make their debut nationally on February 24, and investors of the restaurant chain said consumers could be on the lookout for the chicken sandwich this year.
McDonald’s recently added plant-based items to its menu, and refreshing its chicken n sandwich line is the latest move in the restaurant’s mission to gain more traffic amid the coronavirus pandemic. Before Rona hit, Mickie D’s was struggling with customer loss, as the number of transactions dropped 1.9 percent in 2019, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
In 2019, McDonald’s franchise operators pushed for the chain to get a better chicken sandwich to get its customers back following Chick-fil-A and Popeyes’ reign. “JFK called for a man on the moon,” they wrote in a letter that summer. “Our call should be a category-leading chicken sandwich.” During a webcast, investors Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald’s USA, said that “a much anticipated, delicious, new crispy chicken sandwich” would be on U.S. menus this year. He added that chicken is the right direction to go for the restaurant.
“Globally, the chicken category is almost twice the size of beef,” he said at the time. “It is growing faster and represents a significant opportunity,” he said. “Developing a reputation for great chicken represents one of our highest aspirations. We want customers to choose McDonald’s for chicken.” Erlinger added that the new sandwich would “jump-start our chicken journey.”
