In the latest update in the death trial of Freddie Gray, an assistant Medical Examiner has declared that Gray’s death was “not an accident.”
Dr. Carol Allen testified Friday in the trial of Baltimore Police Officer Ceased Goodson. Allen stated that “with a reasonable degree of medical certainty,” the spinal cord injury that led to Gray’s death was specific and could only happen in a certain way. Allen also said that the injury occurred while Gray was inside of the police van.
“Mr. Gray’s death occurred while he was in custody,” Allen stated. “This is not an accident.”
Goodson, who was the driver of the van carrying Gray, is facing second-degree depraved-heart murder, second degree assault, misconduct in office, involuntary manslaughter, two separate types of manslaughter by vehicle and reckless endangerment. Goodson faces the most severe charges of his counterparts, one of whom was acquitted of all charges in May.
Prosecutors maintain claims of Goodson purposely taking Gray on a “rough ride” in which Gray was slung around due to the reckless driving of Goodson. Meanwhile, defense attorneys claim that Gray’s injuries were sustained due to his own agitation.
Goodson’s trial is set to continue on Monday.
