A Florida medical examiner’s office confirmed Tuesday that the body found in a wooded area in Orlando last Saturday is Miya Marcano.
The 19-year-old had been missing since September 24, when she was expected to board a flight to visit family in South Florida. She was last seen at the Arden Villas apartment complex, where she both lived and worked.
“A positive identification of a female whose body was recovered in a wooded area on October 2, 2021 has been identified as Miya Marcano,” Orange and Osceola Counties Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Stephany said in a statement Tuesday.
“This case is currently under active law enforcement investigation and any further requests for information, including cause and manner of death, will be deferred to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.”
Emergency responders found the body along with Marcano’s purse and ID in a wooded area around the Tymber Skan apartments, approximately 18 miles west of her home and a complex where Armando Caballero, the person of interest in the case, used to live. The 27-year-old maintenance worker was also employed at Arden Villas and accessed Marcano’s apartment with a master key on the night she disappeared. Police say he made romantic advances to Marcano but was turned down.
Caballero was found dead on September 27 from an apparent suicide.
Cell phone records place Caballero at the Tymber Skan apartments for 20 minutes on the same day Marcano went missing.
“We are not looking for any other people,” Orange County Sheriff John Mina said. “We believe, pretty conclusively that Armando Caballero is responsible for this crime and there’s not any other person or persons that we are looking for in this case.”
A preliminary cause of death for Marcano has not been issued.
