On Thursday, Meek Mill sat down with Ebro Darden to talk all things “Championships,” life after his release, and of course, the recently settled beef between his ex-girlfriend, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, who is featured on the new project.
The 45-minute conversation opened up with conversation about the album, from the balance, the message on the album and the explanation behind the name, “Championships.”
“I feel like i’m at a championship stage in my life-beating poverty, beating racism, beating the system, beating gun violence, beating the streets,” he said. “Once I made it through all that I got to a point in my life where I just been living good and ballin’, doing what I do.”
“It’s like a winning stage in my life,” he said, as he opened up about his message behind the project, which focused on the criminal justice system, systematic oppression, and trauma.
As the episode continued, Meek opened up about his track with Cardi, which came amid the longstanding beef between the Bronx-bred rap star and Meek’s ex, Nicki.
“Yeah, [Nicki’s] good,” Meek said when Ebro asked if the two were still cool. “But its like, Cardi B, I feel like is the upcoming new from New York. I like anybody that’s coming from the bottom and raising up and taking care of their family.”
”Cardi, she one of hottest up and coming out of New York,” he continued. “I’m Philly, I’m East Coast. I represent what the young niggas of the East Coast dream of. That’s the same thing I dream of and represent. Why wouldn’t I have a song with Cardi? I ain’t making this about like..” Meek said as Ebro interjected, “You don’t care about that.”
“Yeah, hell na,” he said. “I woulda been did it. I ain’t on that. I’m on some straight positive, get money, doing what I need to do, the way I need to do it. No emotions with this rap sh*t,” he said.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“I don’t got nothing to do with that, that’s girl shit,” he said. “I’m coming over here to get this money cause this Meek Mill and this Bardi gon’ be a movie. If it had to be me and Nicki to get some money, that’s what it’s going to be to get some money. It ain’t really nothing personal.”
