In the new documentary series The Me You Can’t See, Prince Harry opened up to Oprah Winfrey about why his wife didn’t act on her suicidal thoughts while pregnant with son Archie.
“The thing that stopped her from seeing it through was how unfair it would be on me after everything that had happened to my mum and to now be put in a position of losing another woman in my life, with a baby inside of her, our baby,” Harry said.
Meghan Markle did not go through with committing suicide because she did not want history to repeat itself, according to Page Six. Harry lost his mother, Princess Diana, in a car crash in 1997 while being pursued by paparazzi. He was just 12-years-old when she died.
The Duke of Sussex admitted that he did ask his family for help out of shame. He also felt that no one in the family would be able to help.
“That was one of the biggest reasons to leave, feeling trapped and feeling controlled through fear, both by the media and by the system itself, which never encouraged the talking about this kind of trauma,” he told Winfrey.
Now, he says, “…I will never be bullied into silence.”
The couple left Britain’s royal family last year and are no longer working royals. They now reside in Los Angeles.
The Me You Can’t See series airs on Apple+ and focuses on mental health.
