Since the release of the Cardi B’s single ‘WAP’ featuring Megan Thee Stallion, the two female rappers have been on the tip of many tongues and fingers who believe that the song is leading the younger generation of girls into the wrong direction and the video is exploiting animals for views.
One of the individuals opposing the song was James P. Bradly, a Republican running for Congress in California’s 33rd District. After accidentally listening to the song, he tweeted:
“Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion are what happens when children are raised without God and without a strong father figure. Their new “song” The #WAP (which I heard accidentally) made me want to pour holy water in my ears, and I feel sorry for future girls if this is their role model!”
In an interview with Time after being a part of their “The 100 Most Influential People” issue, the young rapper addressed the backlash the chart-topping song has received, especially from politicians.
“When I saw all of the politicians in an uproar about mine and Cardi’s ‘WAP,’ I was just really taken aback,” she said. “Like, why is this your focus right now? If you have an issue with what I’m saying, don’t listen to it.”
In a separate conversation with Oprah Magazine, the rapper said that the song was for the fans [not the critics].
“When me and Cardi were writing this song, we wanted it to be for the fans,” she stated.” “WAP” is a celebration of how fine all women around the world are. Why wouldn’t anyone want to celebrate positive female sexuality? I think that’s a more pertinent question to ask.”
“I think the beautiful thing about women in rap is that each girl doing their thing is flipping that misogynistic, objectification shit on its head in their own way. Lil Kim and Trina were both iconic in their own way. The flow, the delivery, the vibe… all different from each other, but carrying the same message that women deserve to be in control of and enjoy their bodies,” she continued.
The video was also criticized by animal rights organizations and rescuers who believed that the display of cats showed mistreatment for the profit of music videos.
Tiger King Star and Big Cat Rescue CEO Carole Baskin slammed the “WAP” video for “[glamorizing] the idea of rich people having tigers as pets.”
“My guess is that most people won’t even see the photoshopped cats in the scenes because the rest of it is so sexually explicit,” Baskin added.
PETA also weighed in on Cardi’s “WAP” video, giving the news outlet this critique of the rapper’s use of computer-generated animals:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“If Tiger King taught us anything, it’s that tigers and other wild animals are abused for music videos, selfies, and gawking roadside zoo visitors. So, if real animals were used instead of computer-generated imagery, the message sent is that animal exploitation is Okurrr—and it isn’t. If Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion really care about pussy liberation, they wouldn’t use suffering big cats as props.”
Since its release, ‘WAP’ has received 213 million views on YouTube and has debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart.
