A Memphis husband attempted to run over an infant following a fight with his wife in a shocking chain of events Friday evening.
The situation unfolded on Friday when a woman identified as the wife of Ferlandos Wirt and their infant came home around 6:30 p.m. She told police that she’d been at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital with the baby for most of the day, and when she arrived at the residence, Wirt was riding up and down the street screaming at her. The woman quickly ran inside and locked the door, fearing for her safety. However, Wirt was able to enter the home using his key. Once inside, he began violently beating his wife, throwing her onto the floor and slamming her head into a washing machine.
Wirt’s wife tried to fight back, but the deranged man ultimately fled the home with the baby, who was still strapped inside a car seat. Then in a disturbing act that could have ended tragically, Wirt placed the child behind the passenger tire of his vehicle and jumped into the driver seat. He then turned on the car and began backing it up in an attempt to run the child over. Thankfully, the mother was able to grab the baby girl just in time and run back into the house.
When police responded to the home on the 2900 block of Wingate, they found the 27-year-old, though he tried to flee the authorities. When they eventually captured Wirt, he bit one of the officer’s wrists so forcefully that it broke the skin.
Wirt remains behind bars, charged with domestic assault, evading arrest, assaulting a first responder, and drug possession. He is being held on a $10,000 bond.
